The scorching summer temperatures in the UAE require extra vigilance from pet owners. Animals can't tell us when they're overheating, so it's our responsibility to protect them. Here are some essential tips to keep your pets safe and cool.
1. Timing is Everything
The most important rule is to avoid the peak heat. Walk your dogs early in the morning (before 8 AM) and late in the evening (after 7 PM). The pavement can become dangerously hot and burn your pet's paw pads. A simple test: place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can't hold it there for five seconds, it's too hot for your dog to walk on.
2. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Ensure your pet has access to fresh, cool water at all times. Place multiple water bowls around the house. When you do go for a walk, always carry a portable water bottle and bowl. You can also add ice cubes to their water bowl for an extra cool treat.
3. Never Leave a Pet in a Car
This cannot be overstated. A car's interior can heat up to deadly temperatures within minutes, even with the windows slightly open. Never, ever leave your pet unattended in a vehicle for any amount of time.
4. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Recognizing the early signs of heatstroke can save your pet's life. Look for:
If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area immediately, apply cool (not ice-cold) water to their body, and contact your veterinarian right away.
5. Create a Cool Environment
Indoors, ensure your home is well-ventilated and air-conditioned. Cooling mats can provide a comfortable spot for your pet to lie down. For outdoor pets, ensure they have constant access to a shaded, well-ventilated area and plenty of cool water.
By being proactive and mindful, you can ensure your furry companions have a safe, comfortable, and happy summer here in the UAE.
